Progress Report

As I’ve just done my 200th review of the year, I thought now would be a good time to review where I am and where I should be.

Reaching the milestone of 200 means I’m more than halfway through this project. Crucially, though, we’re also more than halfway through the year. July 28th is the 210th day of of 2020, so I’m 10 behind where I should be.

I’m fairly happy with this though, bearing in mind that I didn’t start until January 7th. Also, when I started this, I did say that I would allow myself a one-sentence review if I was struggling for time. So far, I haven’t resorted to that. By no means have all my reviews been thorough or even well written, but they have all been at least a couple of paragraphs.

Of course, the world has changed a lot since January 7th, and while lockdown has given many people the time to pursue a hobby and get things done, for me it seems to have had the opposite effect, and my free time has been at a premium. I used to make regular hour-long train trips to and from work, for a start, which was time where there was little to do but listen to music and scribble on my phone. That’s on hold for now and I’m generally writing whenever I get a second to myself – for example I’m bashing this out while my daughter watches Peppa Pig!

There’s a lot I’m enjoying about doing this. I’m discovering new music every day, trying out albums I would normally ignore and often being pleasantly surprised. I’ve found brilliant records, old and new. Plus it’s keeping my music writing juices flowing and expanding my knowledge.

On the downside, I also feel like I’m “consuming” music a bit. As I have to get these written quickly, I’m not always giving albums the time they deserve. There are albums I’ve reviewed that I now have no recollection of – I couldn’t name a track, hum a riff or recite a lyric – so it’s almost like I’m overdoing it at an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Still, the good outweighs the bad. I’m going to listen to and review 366 albums by December 31st whatever happens, even if it means churning out five or six in a day. I’m not sure whether I’ll continue the project next year but I will keep using the blog in some way.

Right, 166 to go…
