I’ve never listened to Damien Jurado, even though he released his 15th album this May. I read a description of him which used a few words that sound like something I might like, such as “lo-fi” and “experimental”.
He certainly has a wonderful voice and, if What’s New, Tomboy? is anything to go by, he keeps his songs pretty simple and short.
Top tracks here include ‘Ochoa’, with its touching, drawn out lines, and the tender ‘When You Were Few’ with its delicate guitars and keyboard. After reflective closer Frankie, the whole thing is wrapped up in just under half an hour.
These songs are beautifully delivered. I’m not sure I quite hear enough in them to make me want to explore his work further, but I’ll keep an eye on his future releases.
