Ireland is kicking out some great music right now, with Fontaines D. C., Girl Band, Just Mustard, The Murder Capital, Sons of Southern Ulster and Silverbacks just a few names off the top of my head. In addition, I’ve been looking forward to this debut album from Bitch Falcon, which landed on Friday.
They’re a deceptive band. On first listen, I thought they were going to be a bit like Evanescence – gothic and operatic – but maybe that’s just because they have a similarly impressive to vocalist to Amy Lee in Lizzie Fitzpatrick. Gradually, I started to hear more of the textures of bands like Cocteau Twins, as well as notes of grunge and noise-rock, and Staring at Clocks brings it all together rather well.
The best tracks are when Fitzpatrick’s voice hovers just above the stew of guitars, like on the title track and ‘Turned to Gold’, though it takes the centre stage especially well on ‘How Did I Know?’. Then you’ve also got ‘Damp Breath’, which is a superb bit of straight-up, driving punk.
It’s an impressive debut indeed from a band with real potential.
