Thomas Fec aka Tobacco, and his band Black Moth Super Rainbow, make music that I find hard to truly love, but see an attractive curiosity in.
His last album as Tobacco, 2016’s Sweatbox Dynasty, was an enjoyably quirky work notable for its tendency to jump from one bit of music to another and back again, almost like someone who can’t leave the skip button alone or the soundtrack to a bored TV watcher flicking through the channels.
Four years on, his fifth album Hot Wet & Sassy is a little more conventional, and is certainly easier to dance to. Top tracks include the chiming ‘Chinese Aquarius’, and the analogue-sounding grind of Babysitter, featuring Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor.
The vocoded vocals aren’t my favourite, but this is smart, creative electronic dance music that’s raw and inventive enough to appeal to a punk obsessive like me.
