In ‘Sugarcube’, Yo La Tengo wrote what is definitely one of my favourite songs ever. It’s the first song I want to put on when there’s some sign of summer emerging. I’ve never managed to get into much else by them though.
Yesterday saw the release of their 16th album, if we’re counting this as part of their cannon. I’m not sure we are, because this is five long tracks spanning nearly 40 minutes, with no vocals and little to no melody. Just an abstract drone.
It makes me think of what you’d hear if you went into one of those boutique shops that sells joss sticks and fair trade items. I think I hear sitars in parts, the track ‘Georgia Considers The Two Blue Ones (Thursday)’ is slightly more grisly and abrasive, while ‘Ira Searches For The Slide, Sort Of (Friday)’ shimmers a bit, but really it’s the same all the way through.
Hard to review really. I can’t hear anything more than background noise in it, and if that’s all you want, I suppose it’s fine.
