I’m trying to listen to more rap, and that means more clueless reviews as I try to put my views on classic bands of the genre into coherent words based on my entry level knowledge.
If ever there was a time we needed a new Public Enemy record, it’s now, and this as venomous and articulate as you’d expect from them. I did think upon listening to it that had the sound of a mixtape or compilation rather than an album, and from what I’ve read since, many of the tracks on it are from 2017.
Still, it feels like a timely dose of black politics, even if my personal preference is their more rock-based tracks, like the buzzsaw guitars of ‘Yesterday Man’.
