Manchester area band Cabbage have had one or two iffy stories follow them around over the years that I’m not quite sure what to make of, most notably this one. The band fiercely deny it and the furore over it seems to have died down, so let’s try and focus on the music.
Second album Amanita Panthera sees the band continue their offbeat mix of playful post-punk and the sort of psychedelic seasickness you would expect of James Skelly from The Coral and his Skeleton Key label.
At times, it’s vaguely slapstick with its regular use of the 2/4 time signature, but I actually enjoy its comical factor. The ridiculous kazoo-like blasts of ‘Direct – Dictate’ (around the two-minute mark) are probably my favourite moment on the album.
Other highlights include ‘Raus!’ and ‘Medicine’, both of which sound like The Coral after they had binged on Captain Beefheart’s discography.
The album is certainly a grower. I almost didn’t give it a second listen as I initially thought it bordered on being an annoying record. I’m glad I persevered with it though!
