I wasn’t too sure where to start with yesterday’s releases. In the end, the one I returned to most yesterday was this new album by jangly post-punk band Lawn.
I gather Johnny is their second album, and it’s a shamelessly summery record, as you can tell from song titles like ‘Sunshine’ and ‘Summertime’.
Those two tracks are belters too. The former is idyllic and ballad-like, reminding me of Yo La Tengo, while the latter seems a lot like the fulcrum of the album with its distinctive bass line and barked, Parquet Courts-style vocals.
The more uptempo ‘Jane Ryan’ is a personal favourite, and ‘Smile’ is a stomper to finish with.
It’s a shame the first four tracks aren’t that great really. I mean, they’re OK, but not up to the standard of the second half of the album. Still, it’s a great record to stick on and squeeze out what’s left of a weird summer in a crap year.
