It might not seem like it, but I do put a small degree of planning into this blog. Every time I see a future album release that interests me, I make a note of it. Some Fridays it’s just one or two, but last Friday there were six.
One of them was The Illusion of Ultimate Choice, the third album from Californian shoegaze band Sciflyer. I honestly have no idea what made me check this one out. I’ve just written ‘Sciflyer’ on my list at some point, presumably after hearing or reading a description of the band, but I’ve no recollection of this at all
Anyway, no matter, because I like this album. I don’t know who the producer is, but really like what they’ve done with it. I don’t think everybody will as they’ve completely drowned out the vocals, but for me they’ve captured a sense of live music, and some of the energy and togetherness of gigs that we’re all missing at the moment.
Of course, even the best producer can’t save a duff album, so credit to the band for some solid material. Opener ‘Los Angeles’ is very moshable, while ‘Space & Time’ is one to switch off an lose yourself in.
I don’t put on any shoegaze record expecting to hear much in the way of originality. I just want to hear interesting noise, texture and mood, and this album has that in spades.
