Album #146: No Age – Goons Be Gone

  • Released: 2020
  • Origin: Los Angeles, California, USA
  • Label: Drag City
  • Best Track: War Dance

It’s a great day for new albums – or rather it was, since I’m typing this after midnight. I’ve listened to no fewer than six releases from yesterday, all of which sounded pretty decent on first listen. This fifth album from noise-rock duo No Age was the first on my list, and the only one I’ve played more than once so far.

Like Pip Blom who I reviewed the other day, No Age are one of those bands where I’ve liked what I’ve heard from them, but that’s about as far as it’s gone. I think this is the first album I’ve listened to from the band.

And I like it a lot. There are definite notes of the Fall in its raucous, riff-driven nature and Dean Allen Sprunt’s often spoken – almost cawed – vocals.

I can’t get enough of ‘War Dance’, a glorious jam and one of my favourite songs of 2020 so far. I’ve not heard too many better closers than ‘Agitating Moss’ either.

It’s simple music on the whole, but performed with carefully controlled chaos. Great record!
