Album #117: Fake Names – Fake Names

  • Released: 2020
  • Origin: Washington D.C., USA
  • Label: Epitaph
  • Best Track: This Is Nothing

What a lineup Fake Names is! Initially formed by Brian Baker (Minor Threat, Bad Religion) and Michael Hampton (Embrace, S.O.A.), they’ve since recruited Girls Against Boys bassist Johnny Temple and none other than Refused frontman Dennis Lyxzén.

A heavy hardcore backbone, you might think, but this is quite a melodic emo/punk album on the whole. Songs are pretty polished, vocals are clean and choruses are catchy. I found the surprise a bit off-putting at first, but upon a few listens, I started to appreciate it a lot more.

Highlights include the paranoia of ‘Darkest Days’, with a great brooding riff throughout, and ‘This Is Nothing’ serves up the standout chorus. It’s a decent listen alright. Maybe with the names involved though, it’s a bit safe and we might have hoped for a little more.
