I’ve been a bit hesitant to listen to this new album, let alone review it. I’ve never been that big on Pearl Jam, and for a band that have influenced so much of what I like, I feel like I’m a bit ignorant of their back catalogue. Plus I understand that even their most avid fans haven’t been too enthusiastic about their output of the last 10-15 years.
Gigaton is a decent effort from the grunge/alt-rock veterans on their 11th album though. It’s not drastically different to what they have done before, but the songwriting is strong and Eddie Vedder’s vocals are as impressive as ever.
Some of the quieter and more melancholy songs stand out, such as ‘Seven O’Clock’ and the slightly Kings of Leon-esque ‘River Cross’. ‘Take the Long Way’ is the go-to track – I love the gurgling guitars, and the chorus is the most memorable on the album.
I feel like the more I say about Pearl Jam, the more I’m exposing how little I know, so maybe I should leave it there. They’re a band I admire rather than love.
