Album #72: The Dwarves – Blood, Guts & Pussy

  • Released: 1990
  • Origin: Chicago, Illinois, USA
  • Label: Sub Pop
  • Best Track: Fuck You Up and Get High

It’s the 86th day of the year and I’m only doing album #72. I figured the best tactic to get somewhere close to being on track might be to blast on some hardcore punk albums that can be listened to, and summed up, pretty quickly.

The Dwarves’ fourth album, Blood, Guts & Pussy, was once voted the “most offensive album ever” by SPIN magazine. It’s also one of the shortest, blitzing through 12 tracks in just over 13 minutes.

The title should give you an idea what to expect from a record that’s about as subtle as Andre the Giant trying to tiptoe down a woodworm-ridden staircase. It’s a whizz through the outrageous band’s life of drugs, debauchery and hard-rocking, with song names like ‘Skin Poppin’ Slut’ and ‘Let’s Fuck’, the latter featuring sex noises just in case you didn’t quite understand what it’s about.

Saying that, it’s hard not to enjoy it, even if you feel a bit bad for doing so. The 40-second romp (pardon the pun) of ‘Fuck You Up and Get Real High’ is a personal favourite, along with ‘Astroboy’ – an epic by their standards at one minute twenty seconds!

In my teens, I would probably have found this album hilarious. As I’ve got older I’ve become a bit of a ‘snowflake’ and, as a married man with a young daughter, I’m not sure I should be laughing quite so hard. Overall, it’s fine as long as you can accept it as art and performance, and not as an instruction guide on how to live your life. Music needs bands like Dwarves to push the boundaries of taste, even when it becomes hard to stomach.
