I missed this one when it came out a few weeks ago, but it was recommended to me by a friend at the weekend (via Messenger – I’m not one of those clowns who went to a barbecue or house party).
The Wants could be seen as a side project of lively New York art-punks Bodega, although by all accounts the two bands have been going for the same amount of time. On debut album Container, The Wants sound more minimalist than when their members are part of Bodega, but just as intense.
Songs seem to growl and intensify as they continue, particularly the excellent title track.
The band they remind me of most is Wire, but the techno and krautrock influences set them apart as a sound of their own. These are most notable on “The Motor”, which I had definitely heard before somewhere, possibly on 6 Music. It reminds me of Yello’s ‘The Race‘ somehow, although perhaps just by being a largely instrumental song with an automotive theme. The pressing ‘Clearly a Crisis’ (pretty apt at the moment) is another gripping track with grave vocals and jarring guitars.
It’s a great start from The Wants, who I’d say I possibly prefer to Bodega based on what I’ve heard.
